July 2010 Edition.

July 2010 Edition

Although no real "spectacular" has occurred to disrupt the Soccer World Cup currently taking place in the "new" South Africa, we have even so received sufficient reports from various sources to confirm that at least one of the predictions which we made in last month's SCN has come true, namely that many serious incidents surrounding the tournament would be unreported - or under-reported - by the overseas media.
Already we have received the following reports about serious problems which have taken place :-

1) Strikes have taken place by officially-approved security guards at both the Cape Town and Durban stadiums (and we believe at other centres also) which forced the Police to take over security duties.

2) An armed attack and robbery of a group of mainly Australian supporters took place in Nelspruit, which resulted in over $10,000 worth of property being stolen, and one of the Australians being sexually assaulted.

3) The stealing of money, underwear and other items worth over £7,000 from the rooms of England team members at their Rustenburg base.

4) The fact that less than 200,000 rather than the anticipated 500,000 foreign tourists have travelled to South Africa in order to watch the tournament, thus resulting in a massive loss of expected income for the travel and hospitality industries. (Note how TV cameras at matches have always concentrated upon the lower tiers of the stadiums, and only rarely have shown the swathes of empty seats in the upper tiers.)

These are only the incidents which we ourselves have learnt about, yet even these reports have invariably been tucked away in the bottom corners of "page 94" of the mainstream press. No doubt there have been many other similar incidents and failures which will only come to light in the months following the tournament.

Of course the ANC regime and their sycophants - as well as FIFA themselves - have a vested interest in portraying this year's Soccer World Cup as being a trouble-free success come what may, and have undoubtedly instructed their minions to be on their best behaviour for the duration of the tournament. Once the Final is over, however, then it will be a different matter. We have already heard of rumblings of discontent from more militant ANC elements that the staging of the World Cup has been a huge waste of money to the glory of the more privileged classes, which could have been far better spent on uplifting Black living conditions, and once they see the giant "white elephant" stadiums standing unused whilst their shacks still lack electricity and running water then this anger will only increase. The brunt of Black discontent will undoubtedly be centred upon those perceived to have benefited from the tournament, namely the Whites still living in the country and foreign tourists.

We can already hear the clarion cry of "South Africa must be a safe country to visit because the World Cup passed off safely" coming from those stupid enough to believe ANC and FIFA propaganda. Future "ostrich heads in the sand" tourists who think this way will only have themselves to blame when the inevitable happens therefore, as they are bound to lose a lot more than just their underwear!

The Springbok Club/ELC was most privileged to welcome Mr. Steve Crump, the official UK representative of the South African military book publishing company "30 Degrees South", as their guest speaker last month. Mr. Crump gave a most informative and captivating talk in which he first outlined something about his own background and military career in the Royal Marines and SADF Commandoes, and then told how he became involved with the "30 Degrees South" company, before going on to describe many of the books which they now publish and retail. In a vibrant question-and-answer session after his speech Mr. Crump gave accounts of the various military vehicles used by the SADF, and how they had been designed to withstand mine explosions. Prior to the meeting the audience were entertained by Mr. Robin Willow, who sang one of his own compositions, "Last Legion".

Details of the Springbok Club/ELC's forthcoming annual Rhodes & Founders celebration buffet are as follows :-

Date :  Thursday 8th July 2010

Time :  assemble from 18.00 hrs onwards, meeting to commence at 19.00 hrs.

Venue :  THE ANTELOPE (the upstairs function room) 22 Eaton Terrace, Belgravia, London SW1W 8EZ  (nearest tube station: Sloane Square - turn right out of the main entrance, then right into the north side of Sloane Square which becomes Cliveden Place, then finally left into Eaton Terrace where The Antelope is on the left).

John Cormac Seekings has written an acclaimed biography of Charles Dunell Rudd: "Rudd: The Search for a Cape Merchant". During his life-time Rudd was a well-known figure in Britain and South Africa, but was overshadowed by his close friend and business partner, Cecil John Rhodes. Unlike Rhodes, however, Rudd shunned publicity and left few personal records. The sheer absence of documentary records meant that the book is no conventional biography. Instead it is a careful reconstruction, bordering on detection, in the pursuit of certain facts. The book tells how Rudd's life evolved, expanding the role of Cape Merchant to include engineering and financial services.

John Cormac Seekings has spent most of his life in the two countries of Charles Dunell Rudd's life: South Africa and the U.K. (both England and Scotland). He was educated in Natal at Howick Primary School and at Hilton College, and then in the Cape at UCT. Upon completing his B.Com. at UCT he spent most of 1952 trekking across Africa from south to north, usually on foot but occasionally hitch-hiking, in order to study business management at the London School of Economics. His entire working life has been spent in the aviation and tourism industries, usually based in Britain. His work as an economist always involved extensive world travel, including frequent visits to South Africa and across the African continent. In addition to many specialist reports and works on aviation and tourism he compiled the history of his family business, "Thomas Hardy's Brewer" (1988). Since retiring in 2003 much of his time has been spent reconstructing the life of Charles Rudd. He continues to enjoy lawn tennis, canoeing, country walking and foreign travel, and his favourite hobby is history research. His next research project is to explore the remarkable life of his South African pioneer great-grandfather, Dr. Peter Cormac Sutherland.

A sumptuous array of buffet snacks will be provided at this gathering, and the costs will be £10.00 per head for Full Members of the Springbok Club, £14.00 per head for Associate Members, and £18.00 per head for non-members. Payment may be made on the day, but in order to gauge numbers we would ask everyone who anticipates attending to let us know in advance if possible, by 'phoning 07711188430.

In August the Springbok Club/ELC is planning a visit to the RLI Museum in Bedford, and then to proceed to Hatfield in order to pay respects at the RLI Troopie Statue which is now situated there. More precise details will be given in next month's SCN.

On 16th September the Springbok Club/ELC has been invited to attend the launch of Graham Gillmore's new book about his experiences in the Rhodesian Light Infantry and the Pathfinder Company of 44 Parachute Brigade of the South African Defence Force, which will take place in central London.

In October it is anticipated that the Springbok Club/ELC will be addressed by a prominent visiting South African personality.

The Northern Ireland Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC held a small social get-together in central Belfast last month, and plans to stage similar events on a regular basis in future.

The Kent Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC will be staging an informal gathering in Canterbury later during the summer.

The London Branch of the Springbok Club/ELC is planning a trip to the RAF Museum in Hendon later during 2010.

More precise details of all these events will be given in future editions of the SCN.

The Swinton Circle will be staging a meeting at the Houses of Parliament towards the end of July which will be addressed by a recently re-elected MP. More precise details will be circulated to all members and supporters of the Swinton Circle as soon as arrangements have been finalised.

Following the General Election the Swinton Circle has managed to establish good contacts with several re-elected MPs, and has also cemented links with a number of MEPs in Brussels, and as a result is organising a most exciting itinerary of meetings to be addressed by these elected representatives during the remainder of the year.

We have commented in the past about an obviously ANC-orientated campaign known as the "Homecoming Revolution", which seeks to induce gullible expatriate South Africans to return to their former homeland with promises of a better life and assurances that all the problems of crime, corruption and collapse in that unfortunate land have now been overcome. In order promote their campaign those behind the "Homecoming Revolution" have had to resort to quoting many "national successes" which actually took place (or certainly begun) during the days of civilised rule - and in one case an enterprise which actually wasn't South African at all! We thought that all this rubbish was something of the past, but recently we learnt that this misleading campaign had been resurrected and held a seminar in London last March. The question has to be asked, of course, why the ANC regime which is so keen to eradicate all signs of White achievement in South Africa should also be so keen to encourage those Whites who have managed to escape their misrule to return - unless of course it was simply to exploit and humiliate them. All those who are stupid enough to be taken in by this ANC propaganda tool fully deserve the horrendous fate which awaits them!

Like many British soldiers who have spent time in Afghanistan, former marine sergeant Pen Farthing has seen enough hardship and violence to last a lifetime. Still, when he heard the anguished cries of dogs coming from an organised dog fight outside his compound in Now Zad, Helmand Province, he was moved and knew that he had to intervene.

Somehow, the canine victims of the fight found their way into the safety of the compound. Pen and his fellow marines began feeding and caring for these strays, and Pen went on to establish a charity that rescues and re-homes dogs in need in Afghanistan. Together with his wife Lisa, this British-based charity has done incredible work to promote animal welfare and carry out animal aid in Afghanistan.

Every year IFAW recognises the remarkable achievements of individuals who have distinguished themselves in their efforts to improve the lives of animals in the UK and around the world. These heroes are celebrated at a prestigious ceremony at the House of Lords which is hosted by Baroness Gale along with special guests.

The IFAW is now accepting nominations for its 2010 Animal Action Awards. This is your chance to nominate a human who you think has made a significant contribution to animal welfare. You can also nominate an amazing animal, such as previous winner Mandy 'the wonder dog'. Mandy was honoured two years ago for twice saving the life of her owner by alerting him to a fire and raising the alarm when he suffered a heart attack.

We're looking for special people who have done something outstanding for animals: maybe they have devoted their life to saving animals at a sanctuary or volunteered their skills to help treat animals in a poor part of the world. Whatever it was, your nomination will give them a chance to be recognised for the amazing work they do.

The 2010 Animal Action Week Awards will take place in October, so please ensure that you get your nomination in by July 31, 2010.

To nominate someone please contact Robbie Marsland of the IFAW at: and request an application form. Please be sure to include: 1) your personal information and the information of the person you are nominating, 2) a description of the work the nominee has done for animals, and 3) why you think she/he is deserving of an Animal Action Award.

The Rhodesian Light Infantry Regimental Association in the UK (part of the world-wide RLI Regimental Association) has recently had a series of films on a single DVD created which tell the story of the Rhodesian Bush War, as seen through the eyes of the men who fought in it. This is a new set of films which are not in anyway related to those that have been around for a number of years, and the proceeds are to be used to maintain our Troopie statue, smuggled out of Zimbabwe, as well as the creation and maintenance of an RLI museum.

For more details about how to order this DVD please contact Mark Pilbeam at:

A most interesting article written by Rian Malan entitled "Remember Rorke's Drift" ("Britannia Still Rules the Waves" in some editions) appeared in 'The Daily Telegraph' of June 26th 2010, which contained extensive references to a speech given by the current Organiser/Secretary of the Springbok Club/ELC to the Beckenham Young Conservatives during the early 1990s. This, needless to say, was a great accolade for the Springbok Club/ELC, and demonstrates the increasing influence which the organisation is having among the higher "movers and shakers" throughout the West. Although the original speech is now alas somewhat dated (the reference to Mr. Carl Werth, for instance, proves extremely embarrassing, as he has now apparently followed his former Conservative Party of S.A, comrade Arthur Kemp into the arms of the ANC) both Rian Malan's article and the original speech are still well worth reading.

The article can be accessed at :-

We have recently received the following significant report from a pro-Falkland Islands circulation list :-

"There have been several articles in the Argentine media reporting the news that the first [oil] hole being drilled by Desire to the north of the Falklands is a disappointment. 'La Nacion' has one such in its print edition today. But there is a rather more interesting article in its Debate series in 'Clarin' this morning. This suggests that Argentina might do better by co-operating with Britain over the Falklands. It cites co-operation over the de-mining work - which is going on in the Falklands now, and says Argentina has the necessary resources to do this, and should propose that it should have a more active part in this. It also says that Argentina could improve the prosperity of the Islanders. But it makes it clear that all this could be done basically as a tool to promote its sovereignty claim. It says that this would be better than the policy of having regular crises, which it says suits some interests (which is probably a reference to the Kirchners). This article is rather significant. It suggests to me that there is some divergence of opinion in Argentina over whether the current tactics of confrontation and hectoring Britain are correct. It's basically a variation of the old tactic of getting Trojan horses into place in the Falklands. It reminds me of the now time honoured Falklands saying - that Argentines are at their most dangerous when they are being reasonable."

Details the disasters of Mugabe's Zimbabwe, and illustrates the similarities between Mugabe's rule and that of Mandela/Mbeki in South Africa. It can be ordered on-line at:

ISBN: 978-1-920143-49-7 / paperback / illustrated
Retail price: R250.00, Web-site price: R200.00 + postage

The narrative gives the reader an overview of the history of the White man in southern Africa with detailed emphasis on the Rhodesian story through the life and times of PK van der Byl, one of the major players in a political drama that ended in the accession to power of Robert Mugabe under the auspices of the British government. By his very nature PK was controversial and confrontational. This account is likely to give offence to some because it portrays him as bluntly as he was in real life. Much can be contested about PK van der Byl but few will dispute he was an extremely colourful character with a devilish sense of humour.

This memoir covers his life with a full flourish while doing nothing to detract from the seriousness of the international political and military conflict in which he was engaged. The reader will glean new information on a highly controversial subject and emerge with a more sympathetic understanding of what PK van der Byl and his colleagues did and strove for. The human tragedy that has followed the removal from power of Ian Smith and his Rhodesian Front party will almost certainly force the reader to deal with some uncomfortable conclusions, of value to anyone sincere about grappling with the volatile and deeply troubling challenges that confront all Africans today.

This book and others of interest can be purchased from 30 Degrees South via their web-site:

"THE RAPE OF ZIMBABWE" by Ricky Wilson - which tells it like it was (and is)!

Rhodesia was once a prosperous and thriving country, and the story of the author's enterprising and entrepreneurial spirit in that land, followed by his desperate escape from the country when, as Zimbabwe, it became ruled by a tyrant, imparts a realistic perspective of the present desperate plight of many exiles from a country that was once a paradise and the breadbasket for so much of Africa.

No.140 :  Mr. NEVIL TACK of Johannesburg.

Nevil Tack was of German origin, and was a great friend and colleague of the late Leon Strydom, the HNP Organiser for the Witwatersrand during the 1980s. He held very puritanical views on sexual matters, even within the confines of marriage, but married his beautiful girlfriend of long-standing, Madelaine, in 1987. It would be very interesting to learn where he is now - and whether his marriage lasted.

A good colleague from Ulster has recently recommended a singer named Gary Marsden and his band "Anglo-Saxon" to us, particularly a track which they have recorded entitled "This is England". It is truly inspirational, and can be accessed at :-

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II gave ANC leader Zuma the right royal treatment. These are some of the things Zuma did NOT tell the Queen :-

The ANC Government has turned South Africa from a First World Country into a Third World Squatter SLUM with the highest crime rate in the World.

Almost every river in the country is highly polluted and the drinking water is suspect in most ANC municipalities.

The ANC Government is the most incompetent corrupt government we have ever had in South Africa with mismanagement, bribery, kick-backs, fraud, theft and corruption everywhere, billions of Rands stolen and not a single ANC Black criminal in jail.

Genocide of Whites: Since 1994 more than 45,000 Whites have been brutally murdered by Blacks. 3,110 White Farmers have been tortured and brutally murdered by Blacks since 1994.

Most of the White females were RAPED by Black gangs before being brutally murdered.

This is definitely a planned GENOCIDE, and I have personally lodged an official complaint of genocide to the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Reference: OTP-CR-146/08, Snowy Smith, Fair Civil Law, 7 April 2008.

Most Municipalities in South Africa are bankrupt with more than R50 BILLION stolen by ANC Blacks.

Almost every day in the newspapers we hear of ANC Government and municipality tender bribery, kick-backs, fraud, theft and corruption, millions of Rands stolen.

The total infrastructure of South Africa has deteriorated from one of the best in the world to one of the worst with most people purchasing 4x4 vehicles because of the massive pot-holes in the roads.

More than R50 billion of electricity has been stolen by the non-paying Blacks with their illegal connections and their culture of not paying for every service.

Corruption whistle-blowers are getting assassinated by ANC Criminals.

Crime is totally out of control with 60 to 149 murders per DAY in South Africa, and one rape every 17 seconds.

67,000 babies have been raped by Black men in one year.

10 million violent crimes have occurred in South Africa since 1994.

Crime statistics have been fraudulently altered to give the perception that the crime is decreasing, which is totally false.

79% of calls to Police stations - including the 10111 number - are NOT attended to.

South Africa is rapidly turning into a third world Fascist police state.

Zuma had 783 to 1400 criminal charges of fraud, corruption, money-laundering and racketeering, dropped against him by illegal spying and phone-tapping of the Nation Prosecuting Authority.

Zuma then closed down the Scorpions and appointed ANC "yes men" puppets in the NPA. There is not a single ANC thief in jail.

Socialism has failed because the ANC have run out of other people's money.

Once again the "Begging Bowl" is out in the West to bail out the totally incompetent corrupt Black ANC. Corruption has bankrupt South Africa.

Don't be misled with sweet talking LIES.

Yours etc.,

Snowy Smith, Durban, Natal

I not only see things from a White person's point of view. Blacks all over the country are clearly dissatisfied with lack of service delivery, an increasing percentage of unemployed people, maladministration, and corruption among the new elite. Many Whites have voted with their feet by emigrating, as you know.
What has improved you might ask? I believe inter-race relations are much better than they were 15 years ago. There is not the same hostility and sullenness we experienced during the apartheid days, and the general atmosphere is better. Smoking in public places is banned - a plus for the current government. On the negative side, violent crime (which used to be confined in the apartheid days) is now rampant and one's home becomes a jail to keep the criminals out. Excessive wastage of taxpayers' money is increasingly evident; some members of the SAPS are untrustworthy, themselves criminals who terrorises innocent people, often using their position of power to extract "favours" from their victims. The Public Service at all levels of government, with some notable - but few - exceptions, is inefficient and interested only in their salaries and going home. The SANDF is a shadow of its forerunner, and couldn't defend South Africa effectively if attacked - even by Zimbabwe, let alone a major power..

Yours etc.,
Jan Geelvink, Pretoria, Transvaal

What a horrible character that Mr. Allan Robertson [see June's SCN] seems to be! I can assure you that he would get a "hot" reception if he ever dared set foot here!

Yours etc.,
O. van der Westhuizen, Durban, Natal
